We spend our days explaining locks to people who have never had to think about them, and that is the voice these notes are written in. No jargon, no assumptions. Just what you need to know to keep your home, business and vehicle sensibly secured.

Good questions about locks

Lockout Services
I am a landlord. Can you open a unit my tenant is living in?
A locksmith will want to understand the situation first, because a tenant's right to their home is protected and a lockout of a tenant is something only a sheriff enforcing a Landlord and Tenant Board order may carry out. Legitimate reasons do come up: a tenant has asked you to let them in, a vacated unit needs securing, or an emergency requires access. Bring ownership records and be ready to explain the circumstances, and the locksmith will help you handle it properly. Home Lockout Service
Will we get something in writing afterwards?
Yes. The visit closes with a written account of which door was opened and how, the condition the hardware was in, anything replaced, the number of keys cut and who received them. Landlords ask for it when locks on a unit change, insurers after a loss, and franchise head offices as a matter of course. Keep it with the lease; it also tells the next locksmith exactly what is on your doors. Business Lockout Service
Should I rekey or replace the lock afterwards?
Only if the inspection finds a reason. A clean cylinder with sound pins goes straight back to work with a new key. Rekeying makes sense when the pins are worn and sticking, or when a lost or unaccounted key shares the same cut. Replacement is for a cylinder that is corroded, cracked or of a grade that will keep eating keys. Each is offered as its own decision, not bundled in. Broken Key Extraction
Can a split jamb be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Many can be repaired. A split along the grain is pressed back together, glued with a two-part wood epoxy and held by a steel repair plate or a boxed strike screwed through it into the stud, so the fasteners reinforce the repair as well as the lock. Missing wood is built up with filler or a fitted piece. A jamb that has pulled off the framing along its length or shattered around the pocket is replaced by a carpenter, with the opening secured until then. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks
One of my locks is stiff and worn. Can it still be rekeyed?
Often the stiffness is grit, old oil and tired springs rather than real wear, and those are handled while the cylinder is on the bench: the plug is cleaned, new springs go in with the new pins, and a dry lubricant finishes it. If the plug has worn oval or the housing is damaged, the locksmith shows you and suggests a replacement cylinder pinned to the same key, rather than fresh pins in a lock that will keep dragging. Lock Rekeying
Someone forced my door. Can the new deadbolt go into the same frame?
In most cases, yes. The locksmith examines the jamb for splits and stripped screw holes, glues and pins any cracked section, and fits a full-length jamb reinforcer under the strike so the new long screws bite into sound wood and the stud behind. A new pocket is bored to the correct depth. Where the jamb is beyond repair, replacing that section of frame is discussed before any lock goes on. Deadbolt Installation
What information helps before the visit?
Photographs of each lock from outside and inside, plus one of the door edge showing the latch plate and one of the strike on the frame, tell the locksmith most of what they need. Add the door thickness if you can measure it, whether the door is wood, steel or fibreglass, the finish you want to match, how many doors are involved and whether you want them all on one key. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
The lock works with the door open but not when it is closed. Is the lock broken?
Almost certainly not. That pattern means the door has moved in its frame so the latch and bolt no longer meet the strike squarely. Solid wood doors in older houses swell in humid weather and settle on their hinges over the years. The service adjusts or shims the strike and tightens or packs the hinges so the bolt throws without lifting the door, and the lock itself is usually cleaned and lubricated at the same time. High Security Locks
Can the same visit both open the safe and service it?
Yes. Once the safe is open, the lock is inspected for wear, corrosion or damage, repaired or replaced if needed, and reset to a new combination in the same visit. Any bolt work or handle issue found along the way is addressed at the same time rather than requiring a separate appointment. Safe Opening & Combination Change
How do I know what rating of safe I actually need?
Start with what will be inside it. Cash, jewelry, and firearms mainly need protection from tools and time, so the burglary rating matters most. Paper records and digital backups mainly need protection from heat, so the fire rating matters most, and digital media needs a noticeably lower internal temperature than paper to survive. Many households and businesses end up choosing a unit built to both standards rather than picking just one. Safe Installation & Servicing
Do high security locks need special maintenance?
Only light care. Use the dry lubricant the locksmith recommends once or twice a year, never oil, which gathers grit around the finger pins and sidebar. Keep the keyway free of debris and insert the key fully before turning. In winter, warm a resisting key in your hand or use a de-icer rather than forcing it. Check hinge and strike screws each season so the door stays aligned. Treated this way the cylinder lasts for decades. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
How often should a business change its keys as a matter of routine?
There is no fixed interval. Rekey on events rather than on a calendar: a key not returned, a lease change, a break-in, a renovation crew finished, or a key count that no longer matches the register. Businesses with a good register and a restricted keyway often go years between rekeys because nothing prompts one. A yearly check of the register against the keys on the hook is the habit that tells you when the time has come. Commercial Rekeying
What is the difference between a master key and a sub-master?
A sub-master sits below the top level and opens a defined group, such as one department or one floor, without opening doors outside that group. The top-level master sits above every sub-master and opens everything in the system. Most properties need only one or two sub-master levels; adding more than the business genuinely uses just makes the chart harder to manage without adding real convenience. Master Key System Design
Is a keypad code as secure as a card or fob?
A keypad code needs no card to lose, but a code shared among several people is effectively no longer individual, and a forgotten code left active is a common weak point. A card or fob tied to one named person avoids that particular issue, since it is switched off individually rather than reset for everyone at once. Many businesses use a code for general areas and a card wherever entry needs to be traceable to one person. Access Control Installation
What if the existing device is old and no replacement part is available?
Where a specific replacement part cannot be sourced for an older device, the practical route is usually to replace the whole exit device with a current one built for the same door, rather than leave a partially working device in place. This is decided case by case once the existing hardware and door preparation have been examined, since the new device still has to suit the same opening. Panic & Exit Hardware

Car Keys
I have lost my only key. Can a locksmith make a new one at the roadside?
For most cars, yes. After the car is opened, the door cylinder is decoded to read the cuts, or the key code is drawn from the vehicle records against your proof of ownership, and a blade is cut in the van. A transponder key or fob is then programmed through the diagnostic port so the engine will start. Some newer or high-security models need dealer-only parts; you are told that up front rather than after. Car Lockout Service
Do you use original manufacturer fobs or aftermarket ones?
Both exist, and the locksmith will say which is proposed for your car. Original parts match the vehicle exactly and are the safer choice for the newest systems and for features like remote start or phone pairing. Well-made aftermarket keys and fobs are widely used on common models and suit spares and older vehicles. What matters in every case is the correct frequency, part number and chip type, which the VIN confirms. Car Key Replacement
Is there a reason to make a spare now rather than waiting until the original is lost?
The whole process depends on having a working key to read or trace from, so making the spare while that key still exists is simpler than the alternative of proving ownership without any key present and building access from scratch. A spare made now also means a future lost key is solved by reaching for the second one already tested and waiting, rather than starting the whole process from nothing. Spare Car Key Duplication
What happens to my old fob once it's replaced?
A fob you hand over because it is no longer wanted is simply left with you, since it belongs to you regardless of whether it still works. If the old fob was actually lost rather than in your possession, there is nothing to hand over; instead its electronic authorization is removed from the vehicle's memory following that model's procedure, so its remote and starting functions no longer work for whoever does have it, though a mechanical blade built into it can still open an unchanged door lock.
