- The call
- A padlock went on the stockroom's back door years ago for security and nobody has thought about it since, until the walkthrough this week pointed out that the same door is the room's only other way out.

Two doors used to swing as a pair at the community hall entrance, but one leaf has started closing before the other, catching the astragal and leaving a gap wide enough to worry the caretaker.
A tenant fit-out is a common point to bring exit hardware into a space for the first time. As walls move and a room's intended use becomes clear, the doors serving it get measured against that use: occupancy, fire rating, width and whether the space now qualifies as an assembly occupancy. Specifying and fitting the hardware alongside the rest of the fit-out, rather than after an inspector flags it, keeps the schedule intact and gives the space a documented exit from the day it opens.

Scene 1
The assessment also looks at who has to operate the door: mounting height, the force needed to release the touchpad or crossbar, and whether the outside trim's lever or pull suits someone with limited grip or reach. A door that meets a code minimum can still be awkward for the people who use it every day, so this check asks not only what is required but what will work well for the staff and visitors who pass through the opening.
Scene 2
Where the plan includes access control or an alarm, the wiring is run and terminated to the device without touching its mechanical exit function: a request-to-exit switch reports that the pushpad or crossbar was actuated, electric latch retraction lets an authorized signal release the latch for entry, and an alarm module sounds locally when the crossbar is used. On a fire-rated opening, electric latch retraction is arranged to relatch automatically the instant a fire-alarm signal comes in, since a fire door has to keep its active latch and cannot rely on a mechanical dogging function to do that.
Scene 3
The building keeps full control over who enters through the trim on the outside of the door, independent of what happens on the inside. A lost key, a staff change or a new access-control card affects only the entry side; the exit side keeps working exactly as it did on installation day. That separation is the point of the whole installation, and it is worth remembering when any future change is proposed for that door, so entry security is never solved by touching the inside crossbar.

Where a specific replacement part cannot be sourced for an older device, the practical route is usually to replace the whole exit device with a current one built for the same door, rather than leave a partially working device in place. This is decided case by case once the existing hardware and door preparation have been examined, since the new device still has to suit the same opening.
Yes. An exit alarm module sounds when the device is used, which tells staff a door meant to stay closed has been opened, but it does not add any resistance to the push that releases the latch. The alarm is a notification layer on top of hardware that still opens under one motion, which is why it suits stockroom, dock or perimeter doors where entry through that opening should be rare.
An exterior device faces weather an interior one does not: temperature swings, moisture and road salt tracked up to the door in winter. The device, strike and trim chosen for an exterior opening account for that exposure, and more frequent cleaning and light lubrication keeps an exterior crossbar releasing smoothly through a whole winter season.
