homes and businesses in Hespeler

Rekeying keeps the lock you already own and changes which key opens it, which makes it the tidy answer to a lost key, a departed roommate or a staff change. Across Hespeler we rekey single doors, whole houses and small commercial buildings, and cut the new keys on the spot. Calls from Barber's Beach, Fisher Mills, Aikensville and Little Lake are covered too.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 48 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 48% of homes in Cambridge were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Where housing is mixed, doors that have been replaced sit beside doors that never were. A new door in an old frame, or an old door in a repaired frame, needs its strike and hinges checked together so the whole assembly works as one.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Cambridge (2021 Census).Where houses and attached homes share an area, lockouts are as varied as the doors. A porch, a hallway or a shared vestibule each calls for a slightly different approach, and a locksmith used to all three arrives ready for whichever it is.

Someone painted the door years ago without removing the hardware. The faceplate, the strike and the little thumb-turn are all under several coats, the deadbolt scrapes when it moves, and the knob is stiff enough to leave marks on your hand.

If a key has been lost, lent or copied more times than you can count, a restricted key system ends the uncertainty. Every key is numbered, every copy is authorised by you, and the old keys simply stop opening anything.

  1. Layer 1The key

    High Security Locks

You run a home office with client files and equipment, and your insurer has asked what kind of lock is on the door. The honest answer is the builder's knob lock and a light deadbolt from when the house was new.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Three teenagers, a dog walker, a cleaner and one house key that keeps going missing. You are tired of cutting copies and would rather give each person a code you can switch off, with a proper deadbolt behind it.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

The bolt on the front door is keyed on both sides. Getting out at night means finding the key in the dark, and with a toddler in the house you have decided the inside should turn by hand.

  4. Layer 4The door and frame

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

The shop's aluminum door has a bent meeting stile and the hookbolt is jammed half out. The alarm did its job and the display is untouched, but the entrance will not close properly and opening time is hours away.

Good questions about locks

Should I rekey or replace the lock afterwards?

Only if the inspection finds a reason. A clean cylinder with sound pins goes straight back to work with a new key. Rekeying makes sense when the pins are worn and sticking, or when a lost or unaccounted key shares the same cut. Replacement is for a cylinder that is corroded, cracked or of a grade that will keep eating keys. Each is offered as its own decision, not bundled in.

The lock works with the door open but not when it is closed. Is the lock broken?

Almost certainly not. That pattern means the door has moved in its frame so the latch and bolt no longer meet the strike squarely. Solid wood doors in older houses swell in humid weather and settle on their hinges over the years. The service adjusts or shims the strike and tightens or packs the hinges so the bolt throws without lifting the door, and the lock itself is usually cleaned and lubricated at the same time.

Why does the cam matter, not just the key and cylinder?

The cam is the small arm on the back of the lock that actually reaches the door frame and holds the compartment shut when the key turns. Two locks can share the same keyway and still fail on the same door if their cams differ in length or angle. Matching the cam to the one already in the compartment is what makes a replacement lock latch properly instead of sitting loose.

Can the same visit both open the safe and service it?

Yes. Once the safe is open, the lock is inspected for wear, corrosion or damage, repaired or replaced if needed, and reset to a new combination in the same visit. Any bolt work or handle issue found along the way is addressed at the same time rather than requiring a separate appointment.
