Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey

The lawyer's envelope held two keys for the new house. The previous owners mention a cleaner, a dog walker and a brother who checked on the place, and the builder's paperwork shows six were cut originally.

In plain words

If you rent, losing a key is handled in three steps rather than one. Tell your landlord first, since a lock change on a rented unit goes smoother when both sides know about it and both end up with a working key. Then the locksmith rekeys the suite door, and any other cylinder that key fitted, with both parties knowing. Finally new keys are cut for you and for the landlord's set, so the arrangement that existed before the loss is restored on a fresh combination. Landlords generally welcome the call; their hardware stays in place and their own key set is refreshed too.

The call
You let a part-time employee go on Friday. The shop key is on a ring in their apartment, or their car, or a friend's kitchen, and on Monday morning the register and the stock room open with it.

How the visit goes

Technician fitting a steel door knob into a door beside a deadbolt, with an open tool bag of screwdrivers nearby.
  1. Scene 1

Reading each cylinder before it comes off the door

Every cylinder on the list gets a close look while it is still in the door. The keyway shape and the maker's stamp tell the locksmith which pin kit fits and whether the keys can be cut on the van. The feel of the plug with a working key, if one exists, says whether the pins and springs are healthy or tired. Corrosion on the face, a wobbly plug or a key that needs a jiggle points to a cylinder that will benefit from cleaning or replacing while it is out. A homeowner-rekeyable cylinder, recognisable by its small reset slot beside the keyway, calls for a different tool and gets noted.

  2. Scene 2

Removing the cylinder without disturbing the door

Each cylinder comes off in the way its lock allows, and the door itself is never cut or drilled. A knob or lever lock releases its cylinder once the knob is slipped off its spindle and a retaining clip or cap is eased back. A deadbolt cylinder comes out when the interior thumb-turn assembly is unscrewed and the housing lifts away. A mortise cylinder in an older door backs out after its small set screw is loosened, and a rim cylinder on a night latch unscrews from its back plate. Each piece is set aside with its own screws so the door goes back together exactly as it was.

  3. Scene 3

When to think about rekeying again

Rekeying is a repeatable act, and after this visit you know what triggers it. Moving into a new home, because previous occupants and their helpers may hold copies. A contractor or tenant leaving without handing a key back. A separation or a change of roommates. A ring lost with anything that names your address. Manufacturers list exactly these moments, and a household that treats them as routine stays in control of its doors for decades with the same hardware. The locks on the door today can be repinned many more times; only the small pins and the keys change each time.

In the van

  • Plug follower set
  • Key tags and a key register
  • Rekeying pin kit
  • Key blanks in common keyways
  • Pin tweezers and shims

What shapes the quotePreston Locksmith Co.

How many cylinders are on the list
A front door with a deadbolt and a handle is two cylinders. Add the back door, the garage entry, a side door and a shed and the count climbs, and the quote follows the number of cylinders repinned.
Upgrades chosen during the visit
Some people take the moment to move to a heavier deadbolt, a restricted keyway, a reinforced strike or a lockbox for the spare. None of it is required; each option is a separate line.
Time and day of the call
A weekday afternoon and a late evening or holiday call cost the same amount for a lost-key rekey. When a stolen wallet makes the visit urgent, the locksmith still confirms the exact figure on site, once the cylinders and keys needed have been looked at.

Good questions about locks

Does stamping keys 'do not duplicate' stop copies?

It asks; it does not compel. The stamp is a request that a key-cutting counter may or may not honour, and manufacturers say as much. Real control comes from a restricted keyway, whose blanks are issued only through authorised channels against a key card, or simply from knowing how many keys exist and who holds them. A rekey resets that count to a number you chose.

When is replacing a lock better than rekeying it?

When the hardware itself is the weak point: a plug worn oval, a cylinder eaten by salt from a driveway-facing door, a light knob lock on an exterior door, a keyway with no blanks left in supply, or when you want a different style, a heavier deadbolt or a keypad. In those cases a new lock keyed to match the rest of the house is fitted in the same visit. Everything else is rekeyed.

Do I need to be there for the whole visit?

An authorised adult should be present at the start, for identification and to agree the list of doors and the number of keys, and at the end, to test every key and take the count. In between, the work happens at the doors and on the van, so you are free to get on with your day inside. A property manager or a family member with your authorisation can stand in if you cannot be there.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 48 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 48% of homes in Cambridge were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Mixed housing stock keeps a locksmith versatile. A morning might be a heritage mortise lock rebuilt and an afternoon a smart lock paired to a phone on a steel door. The same care goes into both, with tools and parts for each.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Cambridge (2021 Census).Mixed housing brings mixed hardware ages as well as types. A locksmith may rebuild a mortise lock on a semi-detached house and then set up a keypad on a townhouse door across the road, and treats each with the care its owner expects.
